Gladiolus

The Popularity of Gladiolus

Gladiolus are a very beautiful flowers that offer amazing colors including white, pink, purple, red, and orange. They blossom into very full flowers with long stems so they make a lovely addition to the landscaping of any style of home. The different types of gladiolus you can plant aren't too particular about the quality of the soil so you can grow them in many locations. They do ask for plenty of direct sunlight and water though in order to grow to be the magnificent flowers people enjoy so much.

Many gardeners enjoy planting gladiolus because they are easy to take care of. You will need to plant them about ten inches apart in order for them to have enough room to bloom to their full potential. Remove any weeds you come across in the garden of gladiolus as soon as possible so they aren't depriving the flowers of essential vitamins they need to be healthy.

Gladiolus require you to plant the bulbs in the late winter after the soil has thawed out if you live in a very cold climate that often has a bitter cold winter season. You want to select a location that has plenty of sun so that they will grow as to be very vibrate flowers. If your gladiolus don't get enough sun they will only grow to a portion of their true size. They will also fail to blossom.

You need to remove the bulbs at the end of the season though. Place them in a cool and dry area until you are ready to plant them again. If you leave the bulbs underground then they will form clumps in the ground that you will find very hard to remove. The longer they are in place the more difficulty you will have.

If you want to cut fresh gladiolus to display in your home or to give to someone else make sure you use a very long vase. The more of the stem that is covered in water the longer your gorgeous display of gladiolus will last. Cut the gladiolus at an angle so they will keep their beauty longer.

To ensure your gladiolus last even longer you need cut them at the right time. This should be done first thing in the morning or in the late evening after the sun has gone down. You should cut the gladiolus when the buds are just starting to emerge. This way they will continue to blossom in the vase. This can add as much as a week to the time you are able to enjoy your gladiolus once they have been cut.

Gladiolus are a very vibrant and plentiful type of flower that you can enjoy either in your garden or in a variety of special floral arrangements. There is no limit to what you can do with this wonderful flower. That is part of the reason whey they are so popular. Many gardeners find that gladiolus are much easier to grow than other types of flowers they have tried. They also get plenty of compliments on the gladiolus they grow.
